The show is based on a medium, Theresa Caputo, from Hicksville, New York. It premiered in September 2011 on TLC. The third season premiered in September 2012. In October 2012, TLC renewed Long Island Medium for a fourth season.
The show has not been without controversy. In 2012, the James Randi Educational Foundation awarded Theresa Caputo with their annual Pigasus Award. The foundation says that her show is nonsense and harmful to the public.
