What do the little Tomahawks mean on the helmets of FSU football team?

The football team for Florida State University is easily identifiable by their gold helmets with red-and-white spear. They are also adorned with tomahawk decals.

The Seminoles’ coaching and academic staffs award tomahawks for exceptional achievement on the field as well as in the classroom. The word “academics” appears on the handle of apropos tomahawks.

As of September 23, 2023 FSU is at number 4 on the AP Top 25 poll. The Seminoles haven’t started a season this well since 2005.

Their early-season victory is bitter-sweet as they have just learned that Richy Klepal will not be joining the Seminoles after high school. Klepal had committed to the University, but after too many concussions and a revealing brain MRI, his football days are over. FSU has decided to still honor Klepal’s scholarship.
