if a pregnant woman ingested visine eye drops, would it cause her to miscarry?

Not Medical Advice: Visine is not meant to be taken orally. While we found no report of miscarriage, it may be harmful if swallowed, especially in children.

According to Healthguidance.org, the active ingredient in eye drops such as Visine is tetrahydrozoline HCI. Ingesting this substance can lead to a variety of harmful side effects such as dramatically lowering body temperature, causing severe breathing difficulty, respiratory failure, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, blood pressure fluctuation, tremors, seizures and even coma.

Each bottle of Visine is labeled with a warning that urges people to seek immediate medical attention or call the poison control center immediately, if this medication is swallowed.

If overdose is suspected, contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center, or emergency room immediately.

Visine eye drops are a decongestant. It works by constricting swollen blood vessels in the eye, which reduces redness. Irritants cause blood vessels to swell. It is used for relieving redness due to minor eye irritation.
