What does "DG" mean on the uniforms of the Providence College Friars hockey team mean?

The "DG" patch on the Providence College Friars hockey team is in honor of Friars coach "Dave Gavitt", a founder and the first commissioner of the Big East, serving from 1979 until 1990. The city of Providence also renamed a street near the arena "Dave Gavitt Way.”

Gavitt was born on October 26, 1937. He coached Providence to the NCAA playoffs five times, including the Final Four in 1973. He led USA Basketball to create the Dream Team at the Olympics in 1992. He was honored with the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Gavitt died on September 16, 2023 from congestive heart failure. Know more of David Gavitt's celebrated career in sports here.
