Simon was St. Peter's original name. Jesus was the one who named him Peter, which means rock. He was born around 1 BC and died sometime around 67 AD. He was the son of Jonah. He and his brother Andrew were fishermen on Lake Genesareth.
From the passage Matthew 16:18, "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." He was considered the first pope.
In the early 1980's a Benedictine monk and archaeologist, Father Bargil Pixner, began a personal search for Bethsaida. Then investigations from 1989 to 1993, have confirmed earlier suspicions that the Sea of Galilee had changed in size and that ancient Bethsaida was in fact located near the Sea coast in Antiquity. In 1987 the Israeli government officially recognized et-Tell as the site of Bethsaida.
