The MJ (Comanche) came with the AMC 2.5L 150 cubic inch I4 engine as standard and the GM 2.8L 173 cubic inch V6 engine, optionally, in 1986. Also, optionally in 1986, was a 4 cylinder 126 cubic inch turbocharged, Renault-made diesel engine. The Chrysler Torqueflite automatic transmission was also used in the MJ Comanche in 1986 only, followed by the AW-4 four-speed automatic transmission. The AMC 4.0L 243 cubic inch I6 engine was introduced in 1987.
Starting in 1991, the 4.0L engine used Chrysler engine computers. The 4.0L engine used the Renault-Bendix, or Renix, system from 1987 to 1990. 1987 Cherokees and Comanches were the first to get the 4.0L engine, the 1991 YJ was next, then 1993 was when the Grand Cherokee got it, and 1997 was the first year for the TJ having the 4.0L engine as well.
