Are movie theaters typically more or less busy than a typical Sunday on fathers day? Based on ticket sales etc...

Yes, they're busier. An excerpt of this CNBC article, dated June 12, 2016, reads:

The average person will spend about $126 on Father's Day this year, up from $116 last year, according to the annual survey by the National Retail Federation. That comes out to a record $14.3 billion nationwide.

Apparently, a popular purchase is movie tickets. Credit card spending on those items the week of Father's Day saw a bigger boost last year than any other category, according to data from Cardlytics, which tracks spending on one out of every four credit cards in the country. That weekend was the fourth-highest grossing box office weekend of 2015, and was also among the best performing the two years before.

This year, National Retail Federation's survey, released on June 5, 2017, revealed that Americans are expected to spend more than ever on gifts for Father’s Day with the biggest share going to special outings like a ballgame, concert or dinner.

Father’s Day shoppers are expected to spend an average $134.75 for the holiday, up from last 2016's $125.92. With 77 percent of consumers surveyed celebrating, total spending is expected to reach $15.5 billion. That’s the highest number in the survey’s 15-year history, topping 2016’s previous record of $14.3 billion. See survey details here.
