Will the Obamacare case go to the Supreme Court soon now?
On June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court voted 5 to 4 to uphold the majority of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or "Obamacare".
They ruled that the mandate requiring most people to have Health insurance or pay a fine is a tax, and Congress has the power to impose taxes.
Starting on January 1, 2014, most individuals must have insurance or pay a yearly tax of $95 or 1% of their income, whichever is greater. In 2016, this will increase to $695 or 2.5% of income.
For families, the tax will start at $2,085 or 2.5% of income.
