why do elephants have wrinkled skin?
The wrinkled skin of the elephant serves a very important purpose, it helps the animal better regulate its body temperature, and retain moisture. The folds of skin create a much larger surface area then flat skin could, and it allows them to retain between 5 and 10 times the amount of water. As well, when they cover themselves in mud, the folds offer more places for the mud to stick, which helps them stay cool for longer periods.
