Why did Kieran Culkin wear hearing aids in She's All That?

Kieran Culkin plays the role of Simon Boggs, little brother and best friend to Laney (Rachel Leigh Cook), in the 1999 movie She's All That. He is portrayed as a stereotypical geek and an easy victim, hence the (albeit socially insensitive) addition of hearing aids.

Kieran Culkin is the brother of fellow actors, Macaulay Culkin and Rory Culkin. His first role was a small part alongside Macaulay, in Home Alone as "Fuller McCallister" in 1990. He has since moved on to main roles in independent films and small parts in mainstream films.

Culkin was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his role the 2002 film Igby Goes Down and won a Critics Choice Award for the same role.
