J. Edgar Hoover (born John Edgar Hoover on January 1, 1895 in Washington, DC) was appointed to the position of Director of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (the FBI) by President Calvin Coolidge on May 19, 1924; he remained in that position until his death on May 2, 1972 while Richard Nixon was President.
Hoover was well known for keeping files on many political figures which contained sensitive and possibly damaging information about them; it's been said that he used this information for the purpose of blackmail.
