Who sings she works hard for the money?
Seventies disco diva Donna Summer (real name: LaDonna Adrian Gaines) sang the 1983 pop hit "She Works Hard for the Money", which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song topped the US charts at #3 (and US R&B charts at #1), and the album of the same name became her biggest-selling album of the Eighties.
The song and album illustrated Summer's ability to adapt to changing trends in music on the heels of the end of the Seventies disco era, during which hits such as 1975's "Love to Love You Baby" and 1977's "I Feel Love" made Summer a disco superstar.
Summer died after a long struggle with cancer on May 17, 2012 at her home in Key West, Florida. The news came as a surprise to many, as the five-time Grammy Award winner had kept her battle with the disease quiet.
