Before Like Toy Soldiers was made famous by Eminem in 2005 Toy Soldiers was sung by Martika and some of the Kid's Incorporated cast (Stacy Ferguson, Rahsaan Patterson, Renee Sands, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Devyn Puett). It was released in 1989 on the album Martika.
Martika has said that Toy Soldiers is a song about drug use and how drugs control a person, like children with their toys.
Eminem uses samples of Martika's Toy Soldiers in his version of the song. Eminem wrote the song in an attempt to reach the violent members of the rap community.
