The 139th Kentucky Derby took place on May 4, 2013 with three-year-old Orb taking the win. His owner Shug McGaughey says he should be at the the Preakness Stakes on May 18 and the Belmont Stakes on June 8.
Of interest, some Kentucky Derby fans paid $1,000 for a Mint Julep, the "the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby". Bourbon maker Woodford Reserve sold them in order to raise funds for Old Friends, a facility for retired racehorses. The drink was served in a sterling silver cup engraved with the date of this year’s Derby.
