what's symbolic dysfunction?

Symbolic Dysfunction (aka Social Impairment), is a disorder recently addressed; as such, a definitive definition is preliminary. In infants, basic skills such as requesting objects/actions, giving, calling attention, commenting, and showing may be reduced or absent. Higher-level skills that may be affected include difficulties in turn-taking, joining a group of peers, ability to understand or use appropriate body language, initiating and maintaining conversations, and contributing relevant statements.
