Before the University of Southern California became the Trojans they were called the Methodists and the Wesleyans. In 1912 Owen R. Bird, a sports writer, named USC Athletic teams the Trojans. The USC colors Cardinal and Gold were chosen in 1895.

The USC football team was established in 1888. They have an all time record of 793–313–54. They have won 11 national championships and 18 outright conference championships.

According to the pre-season NCAA Football rankings for 2012, released on August 2, 2012, the Trojans will start the season at number 3. They received 19 first place votes. LSU was ranked at number 1 and Alabama was ranked at number 2.
