Phenytoin is in a class of treatments called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing irregular electrical activity in the brain. Phenytoin comes as a chewable tablet, an extended-release (long-acting) capsule, and a suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. The suspension and chewable tablet are usually taken two or three times a day while the extended-release capsules are usually taken 1 to 4 times a day.
