What is the nit basketball tournament
The National Invitation Tournament is the oldest Division I college basketball tournament still in existence. It began in 1938 as a six-team tournament and now includes 32 teams.
Currently, the NIT selects the best teams not picked for the NCAA Tournament, plus regular season conference champions that did not win their conference tournaments or receive at-large NCAA bids. However, in the tournament’s early history, it was on par with the NCAA Tournament as far as inviting the best teams.
The 2012 NIT is currently underway. Some of the favorites are Washington, Tennessee, Miami, Seton Hall and Drexel.
