What is the meaning of sequence?

As a noun sequence means the following of one thing after another, order of succession, or a continuous or connected series. As a verb it means to place in a sequence. The word sequence first appeared in the late 14th century meaning, "hymn sung after the Hallelujah and before the Gospel." This comes from the old French sequence (answering verses) which is from the middle Latin sequentia (a following, a succession). This is from the Latin sequentem which stems from sequi (to follow).
