The 1971 Western film, Big Jake, featured John Wayne as Jacob "Big Jake" McCandles and his trusty Rough Collie simply named "Dog". Big Jake was not a box office success, but received favorable reviews from critics.
Actually, a few Collies from the Ken Weatherwax (Lassie) studio were used to shoot Big Jake and they were the real Lassie's siblings and children! In fact, if you look closely, "Dog" changes its color many times throughout the movie.
The Rough Collie, also known as the Long-Haired Collie, was originally used for herding in the highlands of Scotland. They are generally healthy and are generally good with children and other animals.
