What is the average distance a soccer player runs during the course of a game?

It's thought that a soccer player runs 6.2 miles or 10,000 meters in the average 90-minute soccer game. It varies by position though, with midfielders running the most, strikers and defenders running a good bit less, and goalies running very little at all.

Soccer players can do this because they usually run in bursts, not constantly, and vary their speed a lot. They only tend to run at full speed about 10% of the game, and were found in a 1970 study to be running at lower speeds two-thirds of the time.

Still, it takes a lot of stamina to be a professional soccer player, so cross-country running is considered great training for them.
