What is gore vidal famous for?

Gore Vidal, born Eugene Luther Gore Vidal on October 3, 1925 in West Point, New York is famous for his Broadway plays, screenplays, essays, and novels, and as a critic of American foreign policy.

Some scholars believe his greatest contributions to the literary world were his American Chronicles: Washington, D.C., , Burr (1973), 1876 (1976), Lincoln (1984), Empire (1987) , Hollywood (1990) and The Golden Age (2000).

The second revival of his political play The Best Man can be seen on Broadway now and is directed by Michael Wilson. The cast includes Cybill Shepherd, John Stamos, John Larroquette, James Earl Jones, Kristin Davis, Elizabeth Ashley, and Jefferson Mays.

Vidal, 86, died on July 31, 2012 in his Hollywood Hills, California home from complications of pneumonia.
