Bruno Mars is of Puerto Rican and Filipino descent.
His paternal grandfather was Puerto Rican while his paternal grandmother was Ashkenazi Jewish (from a family from Hungary and Ukraine). His mother was from the Philippines with Filipino and Spanish ancestry.
Bruno Mars was born and raised in Hawaii, and in an article from The Huffington Post in 2013, he confessed that in the beginning of his career, moving to Los Angeles at 17 was a big culture shock.
Apparently, people in the music industry tried to box him as another Latino artist, and even influence him to sing in Spanish. Eventually, he ended up using his childhood nickname Bruno, and changing his last name to Mars, in an effort to “avoid being stereotyped,” GQ magazine writes.
