What happens if you drink alcohol while taking azithromycin?

Not medical advice: There’s very little real danger in drinking alcohol and taking azithromycin at the same time. Medical professionals say that the “don’t drink alcohol while taking azithromycin warning” is a myth passed down from generation to generation as fact.

Because azithromycin may cause vomiting, dizziness, and upset stomach in some patients, these side effects can be exacerbated by alcohol. The microbial properties of the antibiotic are not reduced by alcohol.

Scientists are now saying that chickens raised in the U.S. are the cause for an antibiotic resistant strain of E. coli that causes painful bladder infections in women. Some 80% of antibiotics sold in the country every year are given to animals in order to encourage them to pack on the pounds quicker and for protection against disease in their confined quarters.
