Not Medical Advice: Pale or very light pink gums may be a sign of anemia, especially if there is overall mouth soreness and/or your tongue is swollen or smooth (glossitis).
Anemia means the body doesn't have enough red blood cells or the cells do not contain enough hemoglobin; therefore, the body is not getting enough oxygen.
There are many different types of anemia with varied treatments. Gum discoloration may also be a sign of gum disease. Pale gums along with chronic bad breath may be a sign of a hormonal disorder. Also be aware that some persons do have normal gums that are simply a lighter pink color than those of other people.
We recommend seeing a medical or dental professional as soon as possible, especially if the gums are pale to the point of being nearly white.
