In June of 1993 Lorena Bobbitt (born Lorena Gallo in 1970 in Quito, Ecuador) became famous for using a kitchen knife to cut off her husband's genitalia.

She claimed that she had suffered years of domestic violence and assault at the hands of her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, and one night when he arrived home drunk and allegedly assaulted her again, she attacked him in his sleep.

He denied these charges and was later acquitted of them. She claimed to not remember attacking him, and she was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

In Palm Bay, Florida police recently were involved in a situation they feared might turn into a repeat of the Bobbitt incident. 30-year old Tarra Coppola was arrested after chasing her boyfriend with a knife and several other objects including a Walmart fishing pole.
