Elinor Ostrom was the first woman to win the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 2009. She lived in Bloomington, Indiana, but was a professor at Indiana University and Arizona State University in Tempe.

Ostrom died from pancreatic cancer on 12 June 2012 at the age of 78. Her last article "Green from the Grassroots" was published in Project Syndicate on the same day.
