What are the most common ownership types of hospitals and other kinds of healthcare organizations in the U.S?
The three different hospital ownership groups are nonprofit, for-profit, and government owned (non federal) hospitals. A study of 5 states (California, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and Indiana) showed that the most popular of the three types is nonprofit. The same study showed that nonprofit hospitals are the largest.
Of the nonprofit hospitals the community hospital is the most popular. They are generally supported by religious, cooperative, or osteopathic organizations.
Other popular healthcare institutions include public hospitals owned by the government or teaching hospitals that are affiliated with a medical school.
