Were the munchkins used in the original wizard of oz actual midgets or children?

The Munchkins in "The Wizard of Oz" were played by adult dwarfs. There were 124 in the classic film, but only 9 had speaking parts. They were portrayed by the Singer Midgets, a group from Europe, named for manager Leo Singer, not because of their singing abilities. According to Jerry Maren, the lead Munchkin, they were paid $50/week during filming of the movie in 1939. The Munchkins earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.
