The Mexican American has won six major championships and is looked upon as an icon for Mexican Americans across the country.
He started playing when his uncle gave him some balls and a club, sneaking onto the course of a nearby country club. He later became a caddy, then served 4 years in the Marines (beginning at age 17!), playing golf at Armed Forces golf events in Asia.
From 1983 to 1989 he was a color commentator for NBC television, but also had some big screen time in Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore (1996), portraying himself.
He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981, and later inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame, as a charter member, in 2001.
