Importance of the preamble?

The importance of the Preamble is in its very first words, "We the people of the United States," which defines the source of the powers conferred by the Constitution of the United States. It also clearly states the purpose of the document, for instance to "promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity," which has been of great importance in defending social legislation.
