How often does a lunar eclipse happen?
A lunar eclipse happens about 1 and 1/2 times per year on average. There can be anywhere from 0 to 3 lunar eclipses in any given year. A study done by astronomers found that in a 5,000 year period, there were 7,718 partial or total eclipses of the moon. These figures do not include penumbral eclipses, which are not looked at in the same way as total or partial eclipses. This is because they just cause the moon to appear darker or more shaded in some areas, rather than fully darkened.
