Petri Hawkins-Byrd started working as a bailiff in the Brooklyn court system before moving to the Family Court in Manhattan. He began working for Judge Judith Sheindlin while serving as a bailiff in Manhattan.

He wrote her a letter of congratulations after hearing that Judge Sheindlin was going to have her own court show. Sheindlin then called him and invited him to work as her bailiff on the show.

He has also acted in films, television and commercials, as well as provided voiceover work for radio, television and video games. Byrd’s success has also made him a sought-after motivational speaker.
