Jerry Brown is currently in his third term as governor of California. His first term ran from 1975-1979, and his second term was from 1979-1983. He chose not to run for a 3rd term at that time so that he could run for the US Senate; however, he lost to Pete Wilson.
While in office as governor, he threw his hat into the Democratic presidential primary race, but was not successful. He had another grass roots presidential campaign in 1992, but lost the Democratic ticket to Bill Clinton.
Currently, Brown is leading the charge in cutting expenses and proposing tax hikes in California. He says that if voters do not approve a tax hike, he will be forced to slash millions from the education budget.
