According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about one million people commit suicide each year worldwide, that is about one death every 40 seconds or 3,000 per day. For each person who takes his/her own life, at least 20 attempt to do so. Suicide has a worldwide mortality rate of 16 per 100,000 people.
Suicide is the 10th most common cause of death in the United States. Often it's connected to serious depression, alcohol or substance abuse, or a major stressful event.
People who have the highest danger of suicide are white men. But te3ns and women report more suicide attempts. If someone talks about suicide, take it seriously. Urge them to get assistance from their doctor or the emergency room, or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). It is available 24/7.
Reported by USA TODAY, suicide talk on Twitter mirrors state suicide rates closely enough that the social network could prove to be an early-warning system for those at risk, researchers say. Find out more here.
