With Roy and co-host Buck Owens on board, Hee Haw premiered on 15th June 1969, and eventually secured a place in television history.

The show kicked off as a summer replacement for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, a variety series founded on topical political humor, rock and folk musicians and liberal ideology. Hee Haw was quite the antithesis, to state it mildly. The show, set in the fictitious Kornfield Kounty, made no bones about its unsophisticated humor and rarely injected politics into the proceedings.

Hee Haw became the longest-running show in syndication (1971–1992) until eventually being surpassed by Soul Train. It ranks as the fifth-longest-running off-network TV show in history, although first in its particular genre. Forty-five years later, Hee Haw reruns still air on RFD-TV every Saturday and Sunday.
