How many gold medals did michael phelps win?
On August 4, 2012, Michael Phelps (born Michael Fred Phelps on June 30, 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland) completed his last race of the 2012 Olympics in London England... winning his 18th gold medal!
After the race, in an interview with TV veteran Bob Costas, Phelps confirmed that the 2012 Olympics are to be his last. When Costas suggested that he might change his mind, given that competitive need that many athletes feel, Phelps remained firm that he would not compete in the 2016 summer games in Rio, adding “we’ll go to watch, but we’re not competing.”
Phelps retires from his Olympic career after a very impressive 12 thrilling years. He added 4 gold, and 2 silver medals to his collection at the London games; these made him the greatest Olympic champion of all time.
