How is hantavirus transmitted?

Not Medical Advice: The hantavirus is transmitted to people when they breathe in or touch fresh rodent droppings, urine, or nest materials. You can also get the virus from a rodent bite, or by eating food contaminated by rodent droppings, saliva, or urine. Humans cannot transmit the disease to each other.

Deer mice, cotton rats, rice rats, and white-footed mice have been hosts of the virus. In July 2012, a wild deer mouse in San Diego County in California was found infected with the hantavirus.
