The upper edge of an official NBA basket is 10 feet above the floor, and it must be parallel. The ring around the basket must be painted orange. The closest point of the inner ring must be exactly 6 inches from the face of the backboard. The basket must also have a pressure-release safety ring, and the white netting can be 15 to 18 inches in length.
When James Naismith first invented basketball in the late 1800s, the players used soccer balls and peach baskets. The official basketball wasn’t patented until 1929.
