How deep is the ocean

The depth of the ocean varies across the planet. The average depth of the ocean is estimated at about 14,000 feet, or 2.65 miles.

The deepest part of the ocean is called Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench located in the Pacific Ocean, east of the Mariana Islands. It is estimated to be 36,200 feet deep, or 6.85 miles.

There have been only four descents (2 manned and 2 unmanned) down into Challenger Deep; however, there are currently 3 expeditions being planned. One of those planned expeditions is being sponsored by Richard Branson’s Virgin Group.
