Has there ever been a President that was from an Independent party?
No, there has never been a US President from an independent party; however, at the time of his presidency, George Washington was not affiliated with a political party at all, as there were no parties in the brand new United States of America.
The main political parties took shape during Washington’s presidency as disagreements between cabinet members on the role of the government. With the exception of Washington, all of the US Presidents have been a Democrat, Republican, Whig, Democratic-Republican or Federalist, all of which were mainstream parties.
The 2012 Presidential Election will take place on November 6.
