The global gemstone market is being flooded with a wave of altered rubies. Composite rubies, as they are known, are assembled from numerous pieces of low-grade corundum, which is a multi-colored mineral known as ruby when red, and is fused together with colored glass.
Sold as "Mahaleo Rubies" on JTV, they are only worth $10 to $30 per carat because they are not genuine rubies. These types of treatments are accepted and supposedly do not alter the basic nature or quality of the ruby, but must be disclosed during any sales.
