Does oscar the grouch live in a recycling bin now, and does the cookie monster eat veggies?
Since 2004 Sesame Street episodes have delivered messages about healthy food choices and exercise to children and their families as part of the Healthy Habits for Life initiative. Cookie Monster replaced his catch phrase "C is for Cookie" with "A Cookie is a Sometimes Food" and now eats a diet filled with fruits and vegetables. Currently 1 in 3 children in the U.S. is obese or overweight.
Oscar still lives in a garbage can, but now encourages kids and their families to reduce the amount of trash they create, and to reuse and recycle everyday items. The average North American will toss out 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage in a lifetime.
To promote disaster awareness and preparedness Sesame Street recently aired a special hurricane episode featuring Big Bird, Elmo and other Sesame Street friends preparing for a storm. In it the gang learns about hurricanes from NBC‘s Al Roker along with precautions like boarding up windows and bringing items in from outside.
