Louisiana was the 18th state admitted to the Union on April 30, 1812. It was part of the Louisiana territory (named after King Louis XIV), which was purchased from France for 60 million Francs, or about $15 million. The capital city is Baton Rouge, while the largest city in terms of population is New Orleans. According to the latest census, the population of the whole state is 4,533,372. The state is home to a large number of Cajuns who left Canada in the 1700's when they would not pledge their allegiance to England. It is also home to the New Orleans Saints football team and the New Orleans Hornets basketball team. The state bird is the Pelican and the state flower is the Magnolia Grandiflora and Louisiana Iris.
