jobs
Profession, career and position are somewhat interchangeable; a more concise word is: job. Current job conditions exist due to many decades of legal struggle. 1884 saw the creation of the Labor Bureau which would become the U.S. Department of Labor. The first fair wages law was passed in 1891; such laws didn’t apply to women and children until 1912. The 5-day work week wasn’t introduced until 1920. Although vague laws existed previously, it wasn’t until 1949 that child labor was specifically outlawed. Gender, race and age (40+) discrimination were banned in the 1960s. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 required employers to make reasonable accommodations to facilitate disabilities such as those involving sight, hearing and speech. As technology changes, so does the world of jobs. Obsolete now are jobs such as elevator operator, bowling alley pin setter, lamplighter and milkman.
