Can phones give out a wifi connection?

Yes, certain phones have tethering capabilities that allow the units to be turned into Wi-Fi hot spots, similar to a MiFi device. Some of the devices with this capability include android phones that are running Android 2.2 or newer; certain iPhones (3GS and 4, running iOS 4.3 or newer); Palm Pixi Plus and Pre Plus from Verizon. This feature typically carries an extra monthly fee, and can have data caps. Additionally, use of the feature drains the battery of the smart phone quicker.
