The main characters Richard and Emmeline, played by Christopher Atkins and Brooke Shields, were cousins in the 1980 film The Blue Lagoon.
The Blue Lagoon is an adaptation of a novel by the same name, written by Henry De Vere Stacpoole.
Brooke Shields was only 14 when the film was shot. A body double was used for the nudè scenes, and Brooke’s hair was glued down to cover her private part in the topless scenes.
The first choice for the female lead was Jennifer Jason Leigh, but she turned down the role as the director originally wanted to do the film entirely nudè. Diane Lane also turned down the role for similar concerns. The director later agreed to let Shields take the role with most of the film being clothed.
Lifetime Television recently aired Blue Lagoon: The Awakening a remake of the 1980 film where the lead characters are classmates.
