Are porcupines native to western kentucky?
While North American Porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) might be found in many parts of Kentucky, they are native to most of Canada and the western United States south to Mexico. In the eastern United States, they can be found in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and New England.
The adult porcupine can be 25 to 30 inches and weigh between 10 and 30 pounds. The have barbed quills that they use as a defense against predators (coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, owls, etc.)
In fact, an unlucky bulldog in Oklahoma just recently became the recipient of over 500 quills in a porcupine attack. He is home now and recovering nicely.
